Location: Henn Ave United Methodist Church, Minneapolis --------7 of 12-------- From: rachleff [at] Macalester.edu Subject: Union v Northwest 8.09 4pm AMFA Local 33 invites all Minnesota unionists and union supporters to join a Union Unity Rally to protest union-busting at Northwest Airlines on Tuesday, August 9, at 4pm, at the state capitol in St. Paul. Northwest has demanded that AMFA accept the contracting out of more than half of their remaining jobs (their numbers are already down from 10,000 in 2001 to less than 5,000 today), the reduction of their wages by another 26%, and the transformation of their pensions from a defined benefit program to a 401K. Northwest has hired more than 1,000 "replacement workers" (formerly known as "scabs"), has demanded that flight attendants train additional "replacement workers" in case they honor the mechanics' picket lines, and has contracted with a temp agency to replace ticket agents and baggage handlers who might also honor picket lines. They have also contracted with Vance Security International, the country's most notorious anti-union security force who have busted unions and unionists' heads for more than 20 years. Vance Security was also the primary private security team for the Bush-Cheney '04 campaign and they have been earning big bucks in Iraq. How often do we say: "How has Minnesota changed so much, so fast? IT IS TIME TO SAY NO TO THIS KIND OF UNION BUSTING. Let it stop here. Those of us in Ward 2 who know Chris and like him as a neighbor are nevertheless wondering what is ³progressive² about him. His waffling on the ethanol plant when he was in the city council? His swing vote to let Target bypass the cityıs living wage rule? His support of Randy Kelly in the last election for mayor? His support of Christine Nelson and the Chamber of Commerce against Dave Thune in 2003? If this is going to be a $1 million race, we should ask if the winning candidate will represent voters or those who put up the money. We all know how big money has corrupted U.S. elections, yet a candidate like Elizabeth Dickinson, who will accept no contributions from corporations or PACs, gets the cold shoulder because she canıt raise big bucks. If people want honest government they should look at the money and vote against it, not support it. Elizabeth Dickinson is well known to her neighbors along West Seventh and on the West Side. She has worked consistently and effectively for cleaning up our air, for achieving living wages, and for giving small business a chance by keeping out the big boxes like Wal-Mart and Target. She has given thousands of hours to neighborhood councils and community groups. Yes, she is an underdog in the race for mayor. And the chair of Progressive Minnesota says: ³Our ethos has always been to support the candidates who can win.² -- Like John Kerry did, perhaps? --------12 of 12-------- Charles Reznikoff About an excavation a flock of bright red lanterns has settled. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - David Shove shove001 [at] tc.umn.edu rhymes with clove Progressive Calendar over 2225 subscribers as of 12.19.02 please send all messages in plain text no attachments
