Solidarity Against War and Anti-Immigrant Racism

TWIN CITIES STUDENT W A L K O U T Friday April 28

NOON RALLY at University of Minnesota, Northrop Plaza
High schoolers: leave class 10:30am. Bus, carpool, or march to U of M
rally

Rally followed by march through downtown Minneapolis to:
Free Concert at 3pm at MCTC by Loring Park, featuring Desdamona, Kanser, I
Self Divine, The Elementals, A New Day, Two Wurds, more. Bring a bag lunch.

We are walking out to demand:
* END the occupation of Iraq NOW! to fund education and social needs
* NO! to military recruitment in our schools
* YES! to equal access to higher education
* YES! to living wage jobs for youth
* STOP racist attacks on immigrants and civil liberties

Last November 2nd, thousands of Twin Cities students - from over 40
schools in 16 districts - walked out to protest the war. Up to 2000
rallied and marched at the U of M, and a new youth movement was born.

But the war has dragged on and the violence in Iraq has increased
dramatically. More and more young soldiers are coming home dead or maimed.
Conservative estimates suggest over 100,000 Iraqis have been killed in the
three years of occupation. Over 70 percent of U.S. troops in Iraq think
the occupation should be ended, reflecting the opinion of U.S. workers and
youth at home. Yet Congress keeps giving Bush hundreds of billions more
for this corrupt war for oil and empire. Meanwhile our schools crumble,
tuition rises out of reach, living wage jobs are disappearing, and the
politicians are whipping up anti-immigrant racism to deflect the blame for
these problems from themselves!

A Concert Celebrating the Struggle for Peace and Justice: Folk Song
Luminaries, Charlie King and Karen Brandow

Charlie King has been at the heart of American folk music for over 40
years. His songs have been recorded and sung by other performers such as
Pete Seeger, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, John McCutcheon, Arlo Gutherie,
Peggy Seeger, Chad Mitchell, and Judy Small.

Karen Brandow, while living in Guatemala from 1986 to 1994, broadened her
repertoire to include Latin American music of the "Nueva Cancion" or New
Song Movement. She performs songs in both English and Spanish.

The appearance in the Twin Cities of Charlie King and Karen Brandow
is a rare opportunity to share in the lifework of masters of the
music celebrating the struggles for peace and justice. They sing and
write passionately about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.
Expect a performance that inspires, teaches, entertains, celebrates,
and gives us hope that we can build a better world.

The First Annual Music Contribution in the Struggle for Peace and
Justice Award will be presented to the McDonald sisters, who are both
biological sisters and Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, in a

URGENT Solidarity Appeal:
High School students threatened with suspension for antiwar activity

Please call & email their District Superintendents RIGHT NOW to support
students free speech rights. Numbers are at bottom of the letters from the
affected students, below.

Brief background info:
Across the Twin Cities, thousands of students are planning to walkout
tomorrow, April 28th, against the war in Iraq and against military
recruitment in schools. This will likely be the largest youth antiwar
demonstration in Minnesota since the Vietnam era (more info:
www.yawr.org).
But in recent days reports of repression and disruption tactics from
school authorities has gone way up. Under police pressure, a big peace
concert scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, as part of the walkout events at
Minneapolis Technical and Community College (MCTC), is being shut down.
Below are two urgent appeals from students at two local schools
(Central and Jefferson) were threats against students came to a head
yesterday. Please read these, act on their request for solidarity, and
forward this appeal for help on to others.
Students from these schools are holding a press conference this
afternoon at MCTC's "Free Speech Plaza" at 3:30 PM (Press Release
attached). Please come and show your support!

Appeal from Jefferson High students

We are three students Jefferson High School in Bloomington, MN. We are
being threatened with suspension for passing out fliers advertising the
April 28 walkout. We aren't allowed to wear shirts that say "I'm walking
out for peace." We aren't even allowed to SAY the word walkout.

First we attempted to get posters and lit approved through official ways.
We got called in and told that advocating the walkout by distributing any
material or voicing any knowledge of it happening was going to cause a
disruption to the school learning environment.

We got a National Lawyers Guild lawyer to write a letter to our principal
explaining that Tinker vs. Des Moines gives us the right to organize the
walkout in school, but this made no difference. In our meeting with the
Principal today [4/26] their lawyer had given them a response to the NLG
letter, claiming that it does not fall under protected free speech. Our
right to free speech and protest, as well as the rights of our fellow
Youth Against War and Racism chapter members, have been denied. Basically
we refuse to be censored for our right to practice our political freedoms
including telling people an event is going on. We will continue to pass
out leaflets and they will probably continue confiscating or suspending
people handing them out.

Here's what we'd like for you to do: call our administration. Demand that
our rights are supported. Flood their offices with phone calls and emails
reminding them that teenagers are people with rights, because they seem to
have forgotten. The numbers are below.

--------------
Appeal from Central High Students

At St. Paul Central High School, our chapter of Youth Against War and
Racism has been planning for the antiwar walkout on Friday, April 28 in
solidarity with other Twin Cities YAWR chapters. We are protesting against
military recruiters in our schools as well as against the war as a whole.
We have produced a variety of leaflets explaining our cause and
encouraging students to join us. Over the past week, we have begun to pass
the fliers out more intensely. As a result, our school administrators and
our principal, Mary Mackbee, have attempted to prevent us from passing
them out.

On Wednesday, April 26 before school, many of our fliers were confiscated
by Ms. Mackbee while they were being distributed. We were told that we
would be punished if they were found passing out any more fliers. The
school staff have been instructed to assign detention to any student
caught distributing fliers. Later in the day, when we attempted to get
back the fliers that had been confiscated, we were then told that, if we
were found passing out leaflets, we would be suspended for "willful
disobedience". Our First Amendment rights cannot be ignored. Regardless of
any claims made by the school that we are under their supervision, our
fundamental democratic right to freedom of expression cannot be abridged.
The schools might claim that we are creating a disruption, however a much
greater disruption is being created for us by the military recruiters in
our schools and by the loss of funding that our schools must deal with due
to taxpayer money being spent on war instead of education. We cannot allow
them to continue to prevent us from expressing ourselves. For this reason,
we ask that you help us to protect our democratic freedom and our right to
free expression. We ask that you call or e-mail our District
Superintendent, Lou Kanavati, and demand that we be allowed to exercise
our basic right to expression and distribute antiwar fliers, brochures, or
other documents free of censorship or threats.

Subject: Conversations at the door, events this weekend

Dear Friends,
I'd like to share with you parts of conversations I've had with folks
while going door-to-door in the last couple of weeks:

"Yes, I've been struggling with health insurance costs"
"We were just remarking the other day about the local businesses that are gone"
"You covered one of my top issues: the war"
"No politician's ever knocked on my door before"
"Thanks for stopping by - not too many candidates come by here"

This is where the heart of politics lies: in the work that every single
person does to figure out the challenges we face in this society, and to
talk to friends, family, co-workers and the occasional grassroots
campaigner about them. It's the first step in bringing power to ordinary
people. No amount of time at the capitol can supplant the simple fact that
all power comes from people.

In short, we're having a great time going door-to-door. If you'd like to
join us and you aren't already getting the weekly volunteer messages,
e-mail me and I'll add you to the list.

We published our first campaign ad this week, in the Villager community
newspaper. Did you see it? Did you like it? Ideas for our future ads are
welcome.

Finally, I'd like to invite you to a conference that starts tomorrow right
here in 64A, on the Macalester College campus. It was organized by a
mentor of mine, regarding a set of issues that are absolutely critical for
progressives fighting against violent, destructive foreign policies in the
United States at this time:

Islam and the Modern Orientalist World System
--- This Thursday through Saturday
--- http://www.macalester.edu/mesa/

Why do commentators in print and on television draw detailed conclusions
about Islam despite the great geographic, political, and cultural
diversity among Islam's 1.3 billion adherents? Are political and economic
developments in Arab and Muslim regions the result of Islamic culture, or
of global political realities shaped primarily by Western governments?

Our campaign has made ending the war in Iraq a top priority. I believe
understanding the relationship between our decisions here in Minnesota and
our country's foreign policies is a necessary foundation for making sound
legislation here in St. Paul. Click the link and come to an event to learn
more.

No more amnesty for corporate crime
By Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman
Focus on the Corporation - Apr 25, 2006
http://lists.essential.org/pipermail/corp-focus/2006/000230.html

No more amnesty.

What's the first issue that came to your mind?

Right.

Immigration.

But what about corporate crime?

For years now, major American corporations have committed serious crimes.

And the government has responded with effective amnesty.

It's not called amnesty, of course.

It's called deferred prosecution.

Or non-prosecution.

But it is amnesty nonetheless.

The corporation commits the crime.

The corporation admits that it engaged in criminal wrongdoing.

But to avoid the repercussions of a guilty plea, the corporation is
allowed to enter into an non-prosecution agreement or a deferred
prosecution agreement, whereby the government says -- hey, you're a big
corporation, if we convict you of this crime, your company could be driven
out of business, innocent shareholders will be hurt, innocent workers will
be hurt.

So, we won't convict you of a crime.

Amnesty.

Yes, the corporation agrees to pay fines.

Yes, the corporation agrees to change its ways.

But the corporation is allowed to stay in the country, so to speak, after
crossing the line.

Do you hear about this corporate amnesty on Lou Dobbs?

No, you do not.

Do you hear Congressman Tom Tancredo, R-Colorado, -- the leader of the
no-amnesty-for-dark-skinned-people brigade (the word amnesty appears on
his web site maybe 300 times) -- ranting and raving about corporate
amnesty?

No, you do not.

Does Bill O'Reilly, corporate shill that he is, rant and rave about
corporate amnesty?

He does not.

Why not?

If respect for law and order is to mean anything, it is to mean respect
for law and order across the board.

Not just for dark-skinned people from south of the border.

But blink an eye, and when you open it, a major American corporation
will be cutting some kind of amnesty deal with the federal government.

Even before the coffee had a chance to kick in this morning, the Wall
Street Journal was reporting that Boeing is about to get a deferred
prosecution deal to settle two major federal criminal investigations.

Quoting unnamed sources, the Journal reported that Boeing "would avoid
pleading guilty to any specific charges in both cases while admitting
wrongdoing under what is known as a deferred prosecution agreement."

According to the report, the settlement agreement would resolve
longstanding allegations that Boeing improperly acquired thousands of
pages of Lockheed Martin Corp.'s proprietary documents dealing with
rocket programs and illegally recruited a senior U.S. Air Force
acquisition official while she still had oversight of billions of
dollars in other Boeing contracts.

These types of deferred prosecution agreements -- and their cousins,
non-prosecution agreements -- have become the settlement vehicle of choice
for federal prosecutors facing down powerful U.S. corporations.

If you are representing a Fortune 500 company before the government, and
you can't get one of these, you are either facing a prosecutor out of
touch with the times, or the president of the company should fire you.

That's how prevalent this amnesty program has become.

In a report released in December 2005, Corporate Crime Reporter documented
the rise of these types of agreements.

At that point, the report had tallied 36 such agreements.

Since then, Corporate Crime Reporter has documented an additional eight
such agreements. That makes the total 44.

Boeing would make 45.

It just strikes us as a bit hypocritical to rant and rave about people
named Garcia, Martinez, Lopez, Hernandez, Gonzales, Perez, Sanchez, Rivera
and Ramirez -- when they cross the line.

But then if your name is Boeing, Prudential, Hilfiger, Shell Oil, Solomon
Brothers, Aetna, KPMG, Monsanto, Sears or Bristol Myers Squibb -- and you
commit a crime -- there is no ranting and raving -- only cheering from
Wall Street.
