Professor Stephen J. Cribari will discuss "tweaking death: how, and why,
the Supreme Court balances the power to execute." His talk will include
reflections on federal review of death penalty cases arising out of
state criminal charges. Professor Cribari will also draw on his own
experiences defending capital cases in federal court. This lecture is a

provide practitioners with practical information for representing asylum
seekers in the U.S. Participants will learn the essentials of asylum law
from filing the asylum application to preparing for the hearing. The
conference also offers an advanced asylum track in litigation strategies
for the seasoned immigration practitioner. Through a trained pro bono
panel of over 300 lawyers, Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights
represents hundreds of asylum seekers annually. This annual conference

Dr. Ilknur Altuntas, a judge in the Ministry of Justice in Ankara,
Turkey and a 2006 - 2007 Humphrey Fellow presents. As a modern-day form
of slavery, human trafficking is a serious violation of human rights. It
affects every continent and region of the world and continues to sustain
annual growth. After drug smuggling, human trafficking is the second
largest criminal industry in the world and the fastest-growing. It is
the most profitable criminal activity for funding transnational
organized crime. Turkey, serving as a bridge between Asia and Europe, is
a destination country for trafficking in persons. This presentation will
address the core elements and root causes of human trafficking, its
consequences and solutions, and Turkey's effort to combat human
trafficking. The presentation will also provide an overview of women's

Minnesota Advocates will host its fifth annual human rights law and
policy conference, Children Left Behind: A Child's Right to Education in
the U.S. Children deserve equal access to a quality education without
discrimination. The human right to education promotes a child's right to
a quality education in a safe and respectful learning environment. When
education assists children in recognizing their capabilities, they are
able to reach their full potential and contribute to society. The
conference will address the current state of American schools, including
barriers to access to equal education such as race, class, technology,
geography, segregation, poverty, legislation, funding, etc., and discuss
strategies to eliminate inequity within the education system. For more
