Eighth St., Minneapolis Dr. Ilknur Altuntas, a judge in the Ministry of Justice in Ankara, Turkey and a 2006 - 2007 Humphrey Fellow presents. As a modern-day form of slavery, human trafficking is a serious violation of human rights. It affects every continent and region of the world and continues to sustain annual growth. After drug smuggling, human trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the world and the fastest-growing. It is the most profitable criminal activity for funding transnational organized crime. Turkey, serving as a bridge between Asia and Europe, is a destination country for trafficking in persons. This presentation will address the core elements and root causes of human trafficking, its consequences and solutions, and Turkey's effort to combat human trafficking.
