Women's Human Rights Speaker Series

"Transforming Laws and Lives: 15 Years of Global Reform"

Human Rights Program at The Advocates for Human Rights

 

In February, 2008, one hundred representatives from 29 countries
gathered in Sofia, Bulgaria for the Regional Conference on Domestic
Violence Legal Reform, sponsored by The Advocates for Human Rights and
the Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation.  In all the countries
represented, women's advocates and government officials are working
together on legal reform to better protect women from domestic violence
and hold perpetrators accountable.  This presentation will explore the
remarkable developments in recent years in these countries of the former
Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe, and will outline the
successes and challenges of creating, passing and implementing laws that
uphold the basic human right of women to live free from violence in the
home.

Human Rights Lecture Series

"U.S. Exceptionalism Regarding Human Rights & Humanitarian Norms"

Presented by Barbara A. Frey, Human Rights Program in the College of
Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota and James Dorsey, Fredrikson
& Byron, P.A.

 

The presentation will address the two faces of U.S. involvement in
developing human rights norms: exceptional leadership and creating
exceptions for its own actions.  The speakers will give a brief overview
of the intellectual and moral leadership of the US in the creation of
core human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights.  They will then consider the post-cold war movement away
from any norms that might limit the US's conduct at home or abroad,
using two notable examples -- the prohibition against torture and the
creation of the International Criminal Court.
