On December 31, 1958, Fulgencio Batista fled Cuba for Miami, ending
the US-backed dictatorship and marking the beginning of a 50-year
journey of hope for humanity. This New Year's Eve, millions in Cuba
and around the world will be celebrating the occasion.

Appearing at the Minneapolis event will be two celebrated Cuban artists:

Gloria "La Niña" Rivera, hails from Havana, Cuba, and has performed
and appeared on national and international stages with such artists
and musical ensembles as Chuchito Valdéz, La Orquesta de Joseito
Fernandez, Los Van Van, Orquesta Revé, Son 14, Irakere, and others.

Gloria is the daughter of the well-known Cuban tres player and
composer of Cuban music, "El Niño" Rivera, composer, arranger and tres
player extraordinaire, who literally invented the big-band Afro-Cuban
sound. Gloria's mother, Elisa Portal, was a renowned singer as well.
In 1980 Nino Rivera won the coveted Cultura Cubana Award, which was
presented to him in person by Presidente Fidel Castro (Gloria was
there too!).

Viviana Pintado is a star pianist and vocalist.  Like Rivera she is
also from Havana, Viviana has toured internationally with salsa queen
Albita.  As a member of Albita's group she received three Latin Grammy
nominations. After coming to the United States, Viviana first settled
in Miami where she was named Critic Choice by The Miami Herald  as the
city's Best Pianist and Best Vocalist.  She relocated to Minneapolis
in 2004. Viviana has performed with numerous Latin and Cuban bands
throughout the country and in the Twin Cities. Her dynamic yet
emotional style lights up during each and every performance through
her rich, modern Cuban piano sounds.
