Gun laws have actually been loosened since that horrific event. Colorado, a hunting state, closed the gun show loophole. Eighty-two percent of the Minnesota public supports background checks before all gun purchases. Just in the last several weeks, 53 people have died in mass shootings across the country, including five police officers. Many of those victims were killed with assault weapons, which were re-legalized in 2005. The world is watching in disbelief. Do Americans care that their fellow citizens are being slaughtered? Reporters: Good evening, Mr President. O: Due to the previous unelected president, George Bush, foreclosure is a major public problem in America today. Whole families, single mothers and children, are being rudely thrust out into the cold unforgiving street. All too many die from cold or lack of food or appropriate care, or are set upon by thieves, perverts, pedophiles and organ harvesters. Lives and careers are brutally interrupted. It is a towering reminder of man's inhumanity to man, and the fragility of civilized life. That is the problem. What is the solution? My advisers and I have labored long and hard over this, and we - *I* to tell you the truth - have come up with a truly unprecedented solution, never before tried in the hallowed annals of American history. What is the worst part of being foreclosed on? Being thrust into the street. And worse than being *thrust* into the street is being *foreclosed* into the street. The very word "foreclosure" strikes fear into the hearts of average Americans today. Your parents hear of you and foreclosure in the same sentence and break into tears and recriminations. "Where have we gone wrong", or "Where has America failed us", or, worse, "Where has Obama failed us?" Well, I have not failed you. I am today presidentially ordering the replacement of foreclosure by a bold new invention. Questions? Reporter: And what is that bold new invention, Mr President? O: Bold. New. Both bold and new. R: Fine, sir, but how about the invention part - what is it? O: We haven't quite got there, yet - we felt we'd already made a major innovation by the "new" part, and the "bold" part is especially thrilling, don't you think? R: Yes, sir. But "bold" and "new" are both adjectives, and need to be supported by a noun to exist. You can't just have them by themselves, Mr President. You can't have qualities without there being something for them to be qualities of. And that would be your invention. O: Thank you for the grammar lesson. Of course I know that. All day long with me its things and qualities, qualities and things, trying to put them together in new ways - sort of like erector sets or Legos - and then see how they are qualified to fly. I'm a modern alchemist - trying to make gold out of base metals, only this is making a bold new policy out of failed old policies. R: This is all very well, sir, but you still haven't told us, as it seems to us, what this "bold new invention" is. We are infinitely patient, sir, but the people cannot afford to be. O: There is a method to what you gentlemen may see as my madness. Why do I *appear* to delay? Because I *do* delay. I take my own sweet time - and that is the beginning of the beginning of the bold new invention. R: Delaying? Sir, delaying? O: Indeed yes. All across America this evening people are listening and watching for a word of hope. Hope is when you don't know what will happen, but believe there is some chance of a better future, where that keeps you going in the face of cruel adversity. R: Please get to it sir. O: Ah, the point is to not get to it right away. So long as I don't tell people what it will be, they can hope it will be even better. They can hope against hope that I will give them a better future. In this case that they will not be foreclosed upon and thrust into that godawful homeless world. Now, the longer it takes me to tell them - and you - the longer they will live in hope. The slower I am to speak out the more they manufacture hope up out of their bowels, like a spider his silken thread. The longer and slower it is, the better, like good sex if you're into that sort of thing. R: Finally something we understand, sir. O: Good. I knew you would. I kept it back for some time, so that your hopes began to rise that now it was going to happen - or now - or now - and your hope kept rising rising rising. R: That is not all that was rising sir. O: Well, you see how hope works. I myself learned how to STRETCH it out over months and months - the most anticipated climax in American political history, and all because my words ground exceeding slow - I let the anticipation build up - often based on little or nothing, like a Ponzi scheme - till on election day people were in a perfect storm of hope, a frenzy of delayed political desire, and their votes were countless seeds in the orgasm that brought my presidency to birth. Rs: (Applause). Well done, sir! O: Thank you gentlemen. I rehearsed it several times just for your pleasure. Don't ever say I don't do anything for you. R: Oh, we won't sir. O: Excellent. And now it has finally come 'round to the appointed hour for me to tell the American people just a bit (not too much!) of my bold new invention. What I can tell you is the following (fanfare please) (Fanfare) O: I, Obama, do hereby and of this moment suspend the onerous evil practice of foreclosure, and do hereby replace it with the much more hopeful practice of Threeclosure Reporter2: Uh - did we hear your right, sir - "Threeclosure"? O: Indeed you did. Your have very good ears. R2: Oh thank you sir. O: Other questions? Reporter3: Perhaps you could explain this "Threeclosure" to us. Right now it sounds like a very bad joke. That somehow "three" is less bad and nicer than "fore". O: Well, it weighs less, or would be likely to if one could weigh those sorts of things. Wouldn't you rather have three of something weighing you down rather than four? Of course you would! R3: Four gold bars would be nicer than three. O: Perhaps, but three huge boulders would be better than four. R3: I don't see much difference - just as I don't see much difference between foreclosure and "Threeclosure" - Hey, wait, this must be an April's Fool! O: I have never been more serious. Consider the advantages: When your parents hear your name and Threeclosure together, they won't just like that think it's the end of your world. Ditto for your wife, potential employers, and so on. Foreclosure sounds so final. That's why we've come up with "Threeclosure". One, it sounds better. Two, people don't right off know what it is, and the less they know, the more they hope. This, might I say, is how I became president - and how I hold off critics - they never know when they'll fall on the wrong side of history, where hope will be abundantly fulfilled - and then where will be the naysayers, Doubting Thomases, carping critics? Hope holds them off. With hope, we can get through this term and the next - at least I fervently hope so. R3: Well, will "Threeclosure" keep people from being kicked out into the street? O: We can hope so. We can't disappoint the citizens. Nor can we disappoint the banks, bankers, sheriffs, redevelopers, low-wage employers, riot police, prison guards, and so on, who are thrilled by foreclosure - and so threeclosure can't disappoint them either. I hope it would put a kinder gentler edge to the push out the door into the street. Everybody wins. R3: It seems to us that the latter still wins way bigger than the citizens. O: Please consider that it's all a capitalist president can do in a capitalist country. R3: There are some who hope that will change. O: Far be it from me to discourage their hope. Everybody should hope for something, even if it's impossible. It is just not going to be one of my hopes, though you as free citizens are free to join in some ineffective ridiculous minority and hope away. Reporter4: Threeclosure seems close enough to foreclosure that soon enough people will come to that conclusion and lose hope. O: Ah, well, that's when we may - I don't promise it now - announce something like "Twoclosure", which on the face of it seems half again better than threeclosure and twice better than foreclosure. R4: Right. And when people lose hope in twoclosure, there's oneclosure? O: How did you know - ah - one never knows; that might be a smooth move. A bold president makes smooth moves. R4: And when that goes down, might we finally get noclosure/zeroclosure? O: Oh, no, that would be socialism, not capitalism. Consider all the compromises already made - from fore to three to two to one. It would hardly be fair to go to zero, one side getting everything, the other side nothing. R4: But this way one side is getting everything, while the other side is getting merely pretty words and same old same old. O: As you wish. I for one believe in pretty words, honeyed words, misleading white lie words - anything that keeps people from descending on us with pitchforks. It is my role to stave that off with all the song and dance and sleight of hand I can. Did you know I've been taking magic lessons? R4: Why no. O: Yes. You learn to divert the audience's attention while you pocket the money or whatever, and if you do it well they never know they've been hoodwinked until long after I, uh, the magician, is out of town. R4: You're not offering us much hope. O: Oh, but I am. Did you know that Bush had in the works Fiveclosure and then Six? No, there would have been no stopping them. It would have killed hope right up front. What you do is important, but what you say you're doing - or are going to do - is way more important. R1: Thank you Mr President.
