FREEDOM OF INFORMATION: Open Government vs. Privacy

We have in the last couple decades confronted an unprecedented time and
volume of government secrecy even as our technological developments have
enabled an unconscionable level of identity and data mining. Governments -
federal, state and local - stamp "SECRET" or "TOP SECRET" or
"CONFIDENTIAL" over millions of documents and files containing what should
be public information.

Minnesota's Data Practices Act is riddled with rules designed to provide
or withhold all kinds of information relating to the state's business.
Experts disagree on which should be available and which should not.
Insidious in a democracy, the shutting down of information citizens must
know to properly govern themselves has become an obsession of elected and
appointed officials throughout the systems designed to serve us.

Yes, we have the FOI - the Freedom of Information Act but that has neither
stopped nor abated the attempts to keep from the public the more critical
record of their governing institutions. And yet...and yet. We seem to be
losing the battle to ensure and control our privacy, not to mention our
bank accounts and personal belongings our very identities. We think
nothing of going online and ordering goods and services, giving up to an
electronic data compiler the very information we hold dear.

Why can't we stop the illegal mining of our data while we have to pry open
government files? When is government information legitimately kept from
us? And how can we protect our personal lives from predators?

"Transparency in Government" is the theme of the 2009 Summit of the
National Freedom of Information Coalition at the Marriott City Center in
Minneapolis Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6th. TTT's ANDY DRISCOLL and
LYNNELL MICKELSEN talk with speakers and others expected there
journalists, a heralded advocate, an ethicist and a librarian in search of
the proper access and limits we should seek for governing ourselves and

hatch while being closely monitored. A huge hose sucks salmon out of a
fjord. Metal teeth chomp up fields of sunflowers which, thanks to
chemicals, have withered at just the right time. On mechanized conveyer
systems, chickens are cut up and pigs are gutted in seconds, although cows
take a little longer.

OUR DAILY BREAD reveals the little-known world of high-tech agriculture.
In a series of visually stunning, continuously tracking, wide-screen
images that seem right out of a science-fiction movie, we see the places
where food is cultivated and processed: surreal landscapes optimized for
agricultural machinery, clean rooms in cool industrial buildings designed

This seminar is presented by Paul Epstein, associate director of the
Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School and
a medical doctor trained in tropical public health. Epstein has worked in
Africa, Asia and Latin America and, in 1993, he coordinated an eight-part
series on health and climate change for The Lancet, a British medical
journal. He has collaborated with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change, the National Academy of Sciences, NASA, and the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration to assess the health impacts of climate
change and to develop health applications of climate forecasting and
remote sensing. He has received recognition for his contributions to the
IPCC, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

The Minnesota Home Ownership Center, working in partnership with the
Minneapolis Fed, the Hope Now Alliance and NeighborWorks America, is
hosting a large-scale foreclosure prevention workshop at the St. Paul
RiverCentre on Thursday, June 4th from 2:00 - 8:00 pm.

Local and national organizations partner to combat foreclosures in
Minnesota Partnership enhances statewide efforts, attracts long list of
lenders and servicers to June 4th workshop for struggling homeowner

The Minnesota Home Ownership Center and Federal Reserve Bank of
Minneapolis are joining with two national organizations, HOPE NOW and
NeighborWorks America, to bring a large-scale foreclosure prevention
workshop to the Twin Cities later this week. The event, which is free and
open to the public, will be held on Thursday, June 4th from 2:00 - 8:00 pm
at the St. Paul RiverCentre.

The event will bring numerous local housing counselors, national lenders,
and servicers under one-roof, creating a one-stop shop for foreclosure
prevention. This partnership combines our local foreclosure counseling
expertise with Hope Nows lender/servicer relationships. It is a powerful
combination that will be of immediate benefit to troubled homeowners said
Julie Gugin, Executive Director of the Minnesota Home Ownership Center.

The event, which expected to draw as many as 800 homeowners, is a chance
for homeowners to speak with a non-profit foreclosure counselor and meet
face-to-face with their lender to work on a possible loan modification to
help them stay in their homes.  Over 25 lenders and servicers will be at
the event, including Citi, Countrywide, and Wells Fargo which have a large
presence in Minnesota. There will also be dozens of additional resources
available for struggling homeowners including property tax assistance,
legal resources, energy assistance and more.

The Minnesota Home Ownership Center has offered similar foreclosure
prevention workshops over the past two years. This is the first time the
local organization is working with a national partner.  Resources will be
available in English, Spanish, Hmong and other languages.

You've been hearing about this struggle for the last couple of months.
Yes, there is actually a plan to dismantle the Civil Rights Department in
Minneapolis!!! Yes, the Task Force is doing their job, but the community
really has to let this administration know that we still need our Civil
Rights Department!!!

Do you realize what can happen to the rights of the people if this plan
is allowed to proceed?

Do you understand that we are going to have to stand up and fight for the
Minneapolis Civil Rights Department to remain intact?

What will happen to you if you have a discrimination complaint and you are
gay, or a woman who is African - American, African, Latino or Native
American, European- American, Hmong or any other woman of color, someone
with a disability, or a man who is African American, African, Native
American, and European-American, Latino, Hmong or any other man of color?
What if someone discriminates against you because of your religion or
mental health status? What if you are a Senior Citizen with an age
discrimination complaint? Where will you go if discrimination happens to
you?  We have not come this far to turn back now!!!!  What was the Civil
Rights Movement about if we allow this travesty of justice to happen now?
 You know that discrimination continues!!!This is one of the most
important issues of our time!
