This is a message for Tiger Technologies Web hosting customers who install any custom script software on their Web site.
We'd like to remind you that if you do install any custom scripts, it's very important to keep that software up-to-date.
Older versions of many scripts contain security flaws -- programming errors that can allow "hackers" to modify your Web site files or install malicious software. Security flaws are present in older versions of many different scripts, including blogs, message boards and photo galleries.
As these kinds of security flaws are discovered, the author of a script will release new versions that fix the problem. If you install any scripts yourself, you should keep your Web site secure by regularly checking that you're using the latest version and updating your software when necessary.
The best way to keep informed of security flaws in any software you install is to join the announcement mailing list run by the author of the script. The author's Web site will usually have more information and explain how to join the mailing list.
We should emphasize that we already make sure that any software we install and provide -- that is, the software that runs our servers -- is not vulnerable to security problems. However, we usually can't check for flaws in software you install yourself. While we occasionally send messages directly to customers running outdated and vulnerable versions of a popular script, that's relatively rare. To protect your site from hackers, you should make sure that you know when you need to update any software you have installed.
We hope you find this reminder useful. Please let us know if you have any questions. We appreciate your business!
