Here are the details: Thursday, August 11 5-7pm ON UNIVERSITY AVE. OUTSIDE NORM COLEMAN'S OFFICE (just west of 280) FRIDAY, August 12 7:30-9:30am 11th and NICOLLET, OUTSIDE WCCO STUDIO. After 5 sec. of silence, commented that the race lacked interest. MPR moderator added that there were other races to cover. No news coverage, lacks interest....as far as I know the brief comments in the Observor only touched on the first forum...where everyone was in the process of figuring out format. Could there be a reason 19 candidates are running for 6 elected positions in the first primary in 25 years??? Is there "trouble, trouble right here in River City". Why could Gratia Countryman keep the libraries open during the Great Depression--including aux. services to union halls, schools, streetfront and business reading rooms and hospital books carts? This is the third year of a state wide crisis but st. paul's system is open 7 days per wk. and suburban libraries had minimal hour reductions. How are they doing it...this is one of the questions being directed to the incumbents and challengers at these forums. Other questions-why have city elected officials lacked the will to fund and how would candidates "negotiate" with them? LGA is only part of the problem...where are city priorities and why wont the city treat the independent board as a partner (shared power) instead of a subordinate (brings in the charter revision questions currently flying under the public's radar)? Which candidates are not opposed to CLOSING libraries (and which candidates are stepping back from this) Where's the board's commitment to citizen/resident participation? Will the downtown lib drain staff and resources away from community libraries? How do the candidates feel about censorship and filtering...the Patriot Act? One questioner asked the candidates what were their religious beliefs and how those beliefs would impact their board decisions. One thing these forums have done is to bring forth ideas and encourage discussion. Here's an idea...all of those not making the primary cut or the general election get together and start a citizen/resident participation group? The fledgling CPI was terminated by the board at the tender age of one...long story. This new group would utilize their energy and ideas. 3 remaining forums: Sumner 611 Emerson No. TONIGHT 8/11 6:30-8 hOSMER 347 e 36TH ST. tUES 8/16 6:30-8 Walker 2880 Hennepin Sat. 8/20 2 pm --------3 of 10------- From: sarah standefer <scsrn [at] yahoo.com> Subject: Counter recruitment 8.12 11am "Our Children Are Not Cannon Fodder" CounterRecruitment Demonstration Fridays 11-12 noon Recruitment Office in Stadium Village at the U of M. 1/2 block east of Oak St on Washington Ave. for info call Barbara Mishler 612-871-7871 --------4 of 10-------- Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 17:29:58 GMT From: Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council <kyle [at] mplscluc.com> Subject: CWA/Qwest/strike/rally 8.12 12noon 25,000 members of the Communication Workers of America (4,000 of them living in Minnesota), are nearing the expiration of their contract with Qwest Communications. He spent his life under the radar, mocking conservative mores and putting on the media. Abel's daughter, filmmaker Jenny Abel, offers an unflinchingly intimate portrait of her eccentric father. Following her 80-year-old dad around with a video camera as he embarks on his latest prank (a campaign to ban breast-feeding), Jenny explores the loving and unique relationship he has shared with his wife Jeanne for the last 42 years, while also chronicling the highlights of his mad career: the Society for Indecency to Animals ("A nude horse is a rude horse"); not to mention Euthanasia Cruises, the KKK Symphony Orchestra and Omar's School for Panhandling. Wonderful archival footage reveals a deadpan con man who took particular delight in infuriating television talk-show icons like Phil Donahue. While some have questioned Abel's true motivation (revolutionary anarchist or media menace?), Jenny Abel focuses on the humor behind the scams, as well as the underlying message: Don't believe everything the media tells you. The Bell Auditorium is located at 10 Church Street (intersection of 17th & University Aves SE, on the E. Bank of the U of MN campus). Interesting that the phrase "Randy Kelly and his allies" was used, since Coleman was always one of those allies until he decided to run for mayor. I understand that Chris is trying now to differentiate himself, but his record says otherwise. Particularly on some of the issues you mention: The stadium - Chris campaigned hard for the stadium, under both Norm Coleman and Randy Kelly. Ayd Mill Road - Chris always favored connection, fought for the 4-lane design, but eventually went along with his colleagues to vote on the Council's 2-lane connection plan. Living Wage - Chris voted to exempt Daytons from the Living Wage ordinance, refusing even to support requesting information on their current wages. Neighborhoods - Chris seemed generally to be reluctant to regulate nuisance business, or to put moratoriums on certain types of developments. Environment - Chris supported (and still does) the Holman Field floodwall, which studies have shown is damaging to the riverfront environment. He also has a near-perfect record of voting against all attempts to rid our city of ugly and decaying billboards, or to further regulate them.. Temperment - difficult to say from Council meetings, where he usually seemed bored. But he did have a reputation for leaving community meetings when they weren't going his way, and for yelling at constituents whose causes he didn't support (like GSE activists). Endorsing Randy - Chris has said that he realized as soon as Randy took office that this was a mistake. If that's the case, why did he continue to be one Randy's strongest allies on the Council for the rest of his term? The fact is, there's little in Chris Coleman's record to back up his current claims and campagn rhetoric. He says now that he's a progressive, but he certainly never acted that way on the Council. Progressive votes on the Council at that time genrally lost 5-2, and Chris was not one of the two. How can we be expected to trust him if he's not even honest about his very public past voting record? Jeanne Schnitzen Highland Park, St Paul More info: http://forums.e-democracy.org/stpaul/contacts/jeanneschnitzen == Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 12:22:33 -0500 (GMT-05:00) From: Gena Berglund <genab61 [at] mindspring.com> Interesting, this is the first I've heard of Chris' "vision" for the city. And this so-called "vision" appears to be unsupported by actions that show he is likely to act that way once he has the reins of power. In fact, some of Chris's current positions are contradicted by his votes on the council (see Jeanne Schnitzen's post for more information.) Should I trust what Coleman says or trust what Coleman does? It is also interesting that, according to Jason Barnett's post, Chris seems to adopting or adapting portions of Elizabeth Dickinson's platform. If this is true, it would seem that Chris Coleman may be one of the breed of pols that will change a position according to the political winds in order to gain power. Haven't we had enough of that in St. Paul? I'm supporting Elizabeth Dickinson for mayor for three reasons: (1) she has integrity (the progessive issues that she is running on are issues that she has actually worked on for years as a community member), (2) she is a proven leader, and (3) she will be able to beat Kelly in November. You can learn more about Elizabeth Dickinson at her website: www.elizabethdickinson.org Gena Berglund Macalester-Groveland == Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 12:59:20 -0500 From: Michelle Hoffman <mhoffmandesign [at] comcast.net> As I was reading your endorsement for Coleman the theme song from SNL's "Lowered Expectations" bit was ringing through my head. Unfortunately, I tend to see what's wrong around me and want to fix it. That's probably what drives me to keep sticking my neck out on this forum. I KNOW that the Mayor, Chris and Elizabeth are all decent people who care enough to go through all this campaign thundering around. But I have to really trust my candidate and I base that upon what I know about their positions on the issues and how they vote and ACT as a result. I'm supporting Elizabeth Dickinson because I have worked side by side with her, have seen her in action and know that she can negotiate the halls of office. === Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 09:07:37 +1200 From: Jeanne Schnitzen <gljeanne [at] yahoo.com> Don't you judge candidates based on their past record? Surely you don't just believe everything they tell you, without seeing whether they back up their words with actions when they've had the chance? I'm all for people turning over a new leaf, but if that's the case I wish he'd admit it, instead of pretending he's always been progressive. I'm not willing to take that much on faith. With any luck, the stadium is a dead issue now, but Ayd Mill Road certainly isn't, and both Randy and Chris support connecting it. Of course a large department store can pay living wages. There was no need to give something that big away without even attempting to negoiate it. As for nuisance businesses, of course it's on a case by case basis. That's why I sopke to his general reluctance to back the neighborhood position, and didn't address any specific incident. I have no dog in that fight Mike, I'm just talking about his record. His votes on billboards happened long before we lost the case in court. Hindsight is simply that. As for endorsing Randy, Jason brought that up and I was responding to his comments that Chris has admitted that was a mistake. What I heard Chris say is that he realized that mistake as soon as Randy took office, which then makes it an issue to ask why he spent the next two years supporting Randy so strongly. Lastly, you need only look back to the archives to know that I've been talking about Chris Coleman's records for months - long before we knew who else would be running. I'm not opposing him because we finally got someone who's progressive to run - that was a great bonus, but I opposed Chris before that. I'm opposing him because I think Randy has done a horrible job and that Chris will carry on many of the same bad policies. I'm opposing him because I thought he was a very bad Councilmember and don't expect that he's miraculously morphed from that into a good mayor. I'm opposing him because I've heard him mis-represent his record as being progressive. I'm opposing him because I don't trust someone who bases his campaign on a progressive record that doesn't exist. I'm opposing him regardless of who he's running against. His record is there on the Council website, just look at the archives. Let's all do the homework folks. Jeanne Schnitzen Highland Park, St Paul --------10 of 10-------- James Wright In Response to a Rumor That the Oldest Whorehouse in Wheeling, West Virginia, Has Been Condemned I will grieve alone, As I strolled alone, years ago, down along The Ohio shore. I hid in the hobo jungle weeds Upstream from the sewer main, Pondering, gazing. I saw, down river, At Twenty-third and Water Streets By the vinegar works, The doors open in early evening. Swinging their purses, the women Poured down the long street to the river And into the river. I do not know how it was They could drown every evening. What time near dawn did they climb up the other shore, Drying their wings? For the river at Wheeling, West Virginia, Has only two shores: The one in hell, the other In Bridgeport, Ohio.
