The company is seeking to shift major healthcare costs to active and retired employees. After three years of no raises, the company hasn't been willing to entertain a wage increase for workers during negotiations. The company apparently plans to keep certain work forces understaffed... as they want the current weekly 8 hour cap on overtime increased to 16 hours. We struck in 1998 to achieve the 8 hour cap on overtime... and we don't feel the company is justified in stealing more time from our families and communities. Thanks for your support. Todd L. On our agenda this Sat is the discussion/selection of a new state chair. Ideally this position would be filled by an election by the membership. Since it is an interim Chair, I believe the Executive Committee will be presenting nominations and the CC will be voting on this. The meeting is held at Black Bear Crossing in St. Paul, Como Park (Lexington Ave.) on Sat. Aug. 13, and the Chair discussion/selection will be held after lunch - so get there by 12:45. This is a very important appointment. A special election has not been called for, but, I believe we need as much active feedback from members as possible on this. Feel free to contact your Coordinating Council Reps at cc [at] mngreens.org with questions/thought/concerns. It's exciting that movement film has gotten such a distinction; it's even more exciting that a film directed by two women has gotten this recognition. Come to the Twin Cities premier of this wonderful film and see for yourself what the fuss is about. Meal and a Movie: Every Mother's Son Saturday, August 13 6:30pm MayDay Books, 301 Cedar Ave S, Minneapolis $5 - $10 donation at the door Join us for the Twin Cities' premier showing of the film Every Mother's Son. In the late 1990s, three victims of police brutality made headlines around the country: Amadou Diallo, the young West African man whose killing sparked intense public protest; Anthony Baez, killed in an illegal choke-hold; and Gary (Gidone) Busch, a Hasidic Jew shot and killed outside his Brooklyn home. "Every Mother's Son" tells of the victims' three mothers who came together to demand justice and accountability and who sparked a national movement. As you view this powerful film, we will be serving a delicious "picnic style" dinner of cool summer delights. Lydia Howell, well-known cook to the movement, will provide the meal and host this event, which is a fundraiser for CUAPB. --------7 of 14-------- From: wamm <wamm [at] mtn.org> Subject: WAMM birthday bash 8.13 7pm 1. Could you cite some specific examples where Chris's record reflects this commitment? For me and many of my neighbors in Dayton's Bluff neighborhoods who face the prospect of increased airport noise from an expansion of Holman Field, Chris's record is a bit disappointing--he voted to build the Holman Field floodwall, which would allow even more traffic from MSP Intl to use the airfield. This is a MAJOR issue in our neighborhood (and it's worth noting that Chris's vote here backed Mayor Kelly's position). While I know Diane Gerth will differ with me on this point, I do know that there are a fair number of neighbors in the West 7th neighborhood who were, shall we say, underwhelmed by Coleman's advocacy as their councilperson for their concerns regarding noise and air pollution from the Gopher State Ethanol plant, which was eventually forced to shut down. I actually work downtown, which is part of Ward 2 and was represented by Coleman during his time on the City Council. Downtown St. Paul currently has an office vacancy rate of at least 20%. When noise from nearby parking ramp construction interfered with the ability of several folks in the office to hold a simple phone conversation, I left a voicemail with Coleman's office to complain... and didn't hear a thing in reply. At least one other coworker in my office did the same thing independently of me, with the same response (or lack thereof). Nothing. To be clear, I don't expect our councilmembers to wave a wand and magically make problems disappear, and I understand that there are some issues that are beyond what our councilmembers have the capacity to rectify. Nonetheless, I was surprised that with office vacancy rates so high in downtown, Coleman's office didn't even attempt to acknowledge the call or the issue, let alone suggest solutions. So, I don't quite get it... Coleman's record seems to suggest a different philosophy than "respect for the communities' wishes" regarding neighborhood input into development issues. If [someone] is suggesting he's changed, I hope he's right; but at the same time, I don't think it's unreasonable for voters to ask for a voting record consistent with Chris's change of heart before they buy his conversion. I'm really excited about Elizabeth Dickinson's record on community leadership, though. Folks on this forum probably know her work in cofounding the neighborhood group Clean Energy Now, which managed to persuade Xcel Energy, the fourth-largest utility in the country, to voluntarily clean up the coal-fired coal plant downtown--a move which will save millions of dollars in health care costs and cleaning up the air here in St. Paul. Elizabeth has been an active WSCO member, and recognized on the District Council Honor Roll twice. She has made an open-door policy to district councils and community groups a central part of her campaign---a theme that at least one other poster to this forum has noticed was recently picked up by the Coleman campaign. Dickinson is onto something here... and better yet, she actually has a demostrated record to back her stated convictions up. Erin Stojan Dayton's Bluff --------14 of 14-------- Gjertrud Schnackenberg The Paperweight The scene within the paperweight is calm, A small white house, a laughing man and wife, Deep snow. I turn it over in my palm And watch it snowing in another life, Another world, and from this scene learn what It is to stand apart: she serves him tea Once and forever, dressed from head to foot As she is always dressed. In this toy, history Sifts down through the glass like snow, and we Wonder if her single deed tells much Or little of the way she loves, and whether he Sees shadows in the sky. Beyond our touch, Beyond our lives, they laugh, and drink their tea. We look at them just as the winter night With its vast empty spaces bends to see Our isolated little world of light, Covered with snow, and snow in clouds above it, And drifts and swirls too deep to understand. Still, I must try to think a little of it, With so much winter in my head and hand. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - David Shove shove001 [at] tc.umn.edu rhymes with clove Progressive Calendar over 2225 subscribers as of 12.19.02 please send all messages in plain text no attachments
