An expert in all areas of military law and a noted commentator on matters of national interest relating to the military, human rights, and the rule of law, Dean Hutson, will discuss how giving up those ideas and ideals that make us strong, our greatest weapons, is how we can lose the "war" on terror. He will discuss why the manner in which we prosecute the war changes the nature of who we are and may lead to "national suicide;" and, how once we devalue the Rule of Law and Human Rights for some people, it becomes much easier to devalue them for all people. Biographical Information Dean John D. Hutson was appointed Dean and President of Franklin Pierce Law Center in July 2000. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy upon graduation from Michigan State University in 1969. He earned a JD degree from the University of Minnesota Law School, and thereupon began a 28-year career in the Navy. In 1980, he attended Georgetown University Law Center where he earned an LL.M. degree. Dean Hutson was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and assumed duties as the Judge Advocate General of the Navy in May 1997. As the Navy JAG, he was the senior uniformed legal advisor to the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with three gold stars), Meritorious Service Medal (with two gold stars), Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal as well as other awards. An expert in all areas of military law, Hutson has provided expertise on military justice to local, regional and national media. He is a noted commentator on matters of national interest relating to the military, human rights, and the rule of law. Lectures are free and open to the public (registration required). Lunch will be provided for those who pre-register. Application will be made for one Continuing Legal Education credit.
