Anti-Muslim sentiment has increased and Muslims find themselves under heightened public scrutiny. Legal practitioners and others need to understand the issues facing the Muslim community in order to better serve it. Zafar Siddiqui, President of the Islamic Resource Group in Minnesota, will discuss the experiences of immigrant and indigenous Muslim-Americans in the aftermath of 9/11. Mr. Siddiqui will present information about the local Muslim community, including some of the major challenges it faces today. He will provide various statistics involving discrimination, hate incidences, and hate speech against this community, and present tips for lawyers on how to address bias in the legal system. He will also discuss resources which can be used to gain an increased awareness of Muslim-Americans in Minnesota. Biographical Information Zafar Siddiqui is the president of the Islamic Resource Group, an educational organization based in Minneapolis and St. Paul. He was born in India and came to the U.S. in 1991. Zafar holds a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Louisiana, and is a software engineer by profession. He is also the Vice Chairman of the board of Al-Amal School, the only full-time Islamic school in Minnesota. Zafar is married to Amina and has four children. Lectures are free and open to the public (registration required). Lunch will be provided for those who pre-register.
